Beginner’s guide on how to trade silver vs euro (XAG/EUR)

Reading time: 8 minutes

Silver and the euro are influenced by very different forces, which makes XAG/EUR an interesting market to watch. Silver can react to industrial demand, investment flows and changes in interest rate expectations, while the euro is shaped by European economic conditions, European Central Bank (ECB) policy decisions and global risk sentiment. When these two markets are combined, the result is a cross-market instrument that requires traders to look at both sides of the equation.

XAG/EUR shows the value of one troy ounce of silver in euros, so the pair can rise because silver strengthens, the euro weakens, or both happen at the same time. Traders learning how to trade XAG/EUR usually also learn how this relationship works. A view on silver alone is typically not always enough for informed trading decisions; changes in the euro can amplify or offset a move in the precious metal. Understanding these interactions can help traders develop a more informed XAG/EUR trading strategy.

Key Points

  • XAG/EUR tracks the value of one troy ounce of silver in euros, so both silver and euro movements can affect the price.
  • Silver responds to industrial demand, investment flows, interest rates, the US dollar and supply conditions, while the euro is typically influenced by ECB policy and euro area economic data.
  • CFDs allow traders to speculate on rising or falling XAG/EUR prices without owning physical silver, but leverage can magnify both gains and losses.

What is XAG/EUR?

XAG is the standard market code for one troy ounce of silver, while EUR represents the euro. XAG/EUR, therefore, shows how many euros are needed to buy one troy ounce of silver. For example, if XAG/EUR trades at €80, you would need to pay €80 to buy one troy ounce of silver.

The pair can rise for two reasons. Silver may become more expensive, or the euro may weaken. Conversely, falling silver prices or a stronger euro can put downward pressure on XAG/EUR. This makes silver vs EUR trading different from trading silver against the US dollar (XAG/USD). Silver is primarily quoted internationally in US dollars. A useful way to understand the relationship is:

XAG/EUR ≈ XAG/USD ÷ EUR/USD

This means a rise in silver against the USD can push XAG/EUR higher, while a stronger euro against the US dollar can have the opposite effect. Understanding this relationship is generally considered an important part of learning how to trade silver against EUR.

What moves the price of silver?

Understanding silver’s price drivers is an important first step for traders towards developing an effective XAG/EUR trading strategy.

Industrial demand

Silver has extensive industrial applications. It is used in electronics, electrical equipment, solar panels, vehicles and other technologies. According to the Silver Institute, industrial fabrication is forecast to decline by 2% in 2026 to around 650 million ounces. However, the overall silver market is still expected to record a supply deficit of around 67 million ounces for the year. Thrifting and substitution in solar applications are reducing some demand, while data centres, AI-related technologies and automotive applications are supporting consumption. When demand outstrips supply, price tends to rise, and vice versa.

Investment demand

Silver also attracts investors looking for exposure to precious metals. Investment demand can increase when financial market uncertainty rises or when investors expect lower interest rates. When interest rates rise, investors tend to favour interest-bearing assets. In addition, if the supply deficit narrows or the market moves into surplus, silver might seem less attractive to investors.

Supply

Mining, recycling and above-ground inventories also influence silver prices. Although global silver supply is forecasted to rise in 2027, the market is still expected to remain in deficit. This is why traders commonly watch both supply growth and changes in physical demand.

Interest rates and the USD

Higher interest rates can make interest-bearing assets relatively more attractive because silver doesn’t pay interest.

The USD also matters because silver is primarily priced in dollars. A stronger dollar tends to make dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

Furthermore, silver’s volatility through 2026 showed how quickly monetary-policy expectations can affect precious metals. The precious metal reached an all-time high of US$121.64 per ounce on 29 January 2026, after more than doubling in 2025. It then plunged 26-30% in a single session on 30 January 2026. However, by the beginning of October, the silver price was up almost 30% from its price a year ago. Despite sticky inflation, the ECB and US Federal Reserve (Fed) did not raise interest rates till September. Silver prices had declined more than 8% within a month since the rate hikes.

What drives the euro?

Learning how to trade XAG/EUR also requires an understanding of what moves the euro.

ECB interest rates

The ECB plays a central role in determining the attractiveness of euro-denominated assets. Higher rates can support the euro by improving potential returns on those assets, although the currency also depends on economic growth expectations, inflation and global risk sentiment. The central bank raised all three key interest rates by 25 basis points at its September 2026 meeting. The EUR fell 0.19% against the USD immediately after this announcement due to market concerns regarding the economic impact of future rate hikes, with the ECB forecasting euro area inflation at 3.0% for 2026 and economic growth at 0.9%. This shows why traders usually do not consider ECB rate decisions in isolation.

Euro area economic growth

Economic data can also move the euro. Traders typically monitor inflation, GDP, employment, manufacturing and services activity. Stronger-than-expected data can increase expectations for tighter monetary policy or support the view that the euro area economy is becoming more resilient. Weak data can have the opposite effect.

Global risk sentiment

The euro can also respond to broader market sentiment. Political developments, geopolitical tensions, energy prices and changes in global risk appetite can influence capital flows into and out of European assets. For XAG/EUR traders, this can create an important interaction: uncertainty may support demand for precious metals while simultaneously affecting the euro.

How to trade XAG/EUR

Contracts for Difference (CFDs) are one way to approach silver vs EUR trading. They allow traders to speculate on price movements without owning or worrying about storing physical silver. In addition, they offer the flexibility to trade both rising and falling markets. A trader expecting XAG/EUR to rise could open a long position, while a trader expecting the pair to fall could open a short position.

CFDs can also be traded using leverage. This allows traders to gain exposure to a larger position with a smaller amount of upfront capital. However, leverage magnifies both potential gains and losses, making position sizing and risk management essential.

When trading silver vs EUR, traders frequently combine fundamental and technical analysis. They might start with the fundamentals, monitoring silver demand and supply, US monetary policy, the USD, ECB decisions, euro area economic data and broader market sentiment.

Then, they often use technical analysis to identify potential entry and exit points. Support and resistance, trendlines, moving averages and momentum indicators can help traders assess price direction and strength. A demo account allows beginners to test their XAG/EUR trading strategy without risking real money. It provides an opportunity to become familiar with the platform, practise analysing economic releases and test different technical approaches.
