The euro was released on 1 January 1999, following a decade of preparations: for the first three years, it was a 'invisible' currency, used exclusively for accounting purposes and electronic payments. Coins and banknotes were introduced on 1 January 2002, and the largest currency changeover in history occurred in 12 EU countries. It was first made in 1961 when South Africa became a country. It took the place of the South African pound, which had been the legal currency of the Union of South Africa since 1910, when it was set up as a British colony.
